Louisiana had a great showing at South by Southwest this past year between the StartupBus and Launch Pad Ignition. For newbie techs South by Southwest (SXSW) is a conference of gargantuan proportions in Austin, Texas every March that is split into three tracks: interactive, film, and music.

This year, local companies and community leaders are already looking forward to a successful SXSW 2013. Three local panel proposals are currently active in the SXSW “Panel Picker,” where crowd-voting has a 30% effect on which panels get presented at the conference.

Geek Nirvana: Achieving Data-Driven Team Happiness

Chris Schultz is organizing a panel that includes speakers from Delivering Happiness and Google to discuss the importance of happiness in company culture and the workplace. The concept is what has driven the development of his latest app, Niko Niko.

“Knowing the emotional pulse of your team is something I believe will be critical to high-performing organizations and creating awesome places to work, and I’m excited to explore this at SXSW 2013,” said Chris. Vote for team happy here.

From Nothing to Something: Hack Day Lessons

We’re no strangers to “Hack” events and the challenges involved for organizers, developers, designers, and more. Matthew Tritico, BarCampNOLA co-organizer and developer at FedSample, is organizing this panel that includes co-organizer of BarCampNOLA Nicky Mast, Chris Boudy of NewOrleansTech.net, and Barrett Conrad of GNOCODE and Red Ticket Games.

Topics to be discussed on the panel include the community and skill-building aspect of hack days, managing projects from start to finish in one day, choosing the right technology, and project sustainability. Vote for NOLA hackers here.

How to (Legally) Source Music for Your Video

Audiosocket is a New Orleans and Seattle based music licensing company that has changed the way music is sourced online. The legal environment around copyrights, licensing, and digital content continues to be a mine field that many would rather safely avoid.

Members of the Audiosocket team will use this panel slot to talk about sourcing quality music, doing it on a budget, and supporting artists. Support legal music and this great New Orleans company by voting here.

Thanks Molly, great summary of the SXSW pitches for 2013. SXSW has been an important event for the NOLA tech ecosystem dating back to 2009 (wow, time flies) when a bunch of crazy Net2NO’ers rented a bus and took Austin by storm. I was at a wedding this weekend and people from LA were talking about meeting all the techies from NOLA that year, so the impact is still being felt of NOLA’s presence at SXSW. I hope people will support all these panels this year. You voting a *thumbs up* matters – 30% of the selection criteria is based on this community support. A comment is even awesomer!
