First Celebrity-Driven, Social Impact Hackathon Makes Splash at Sundance

The first celebrity-driven social impact hackathon combined tech skills and celebrity drive to hack the Sundance Film Festival. Hackdance was created after the all-star team of hackathon organizers Cooper Harris, Travis Laurendine and Alex Donn noticed a key element missing from other social impact hackathons: the websites and apps created often went nowhere. By bringing in the celebrity influence at Sundance, Hackdance hoped to push finished projects out to the public.

Pro-Uber Petition Sent to New Orleans City Hall

Back in November, community members and fans of technology and convenience banded together to create a petition to bring the on demand car request service Uber to New Orleans. Supporters of the petition have expressed that the city of New Orleans needs to show that its open to allowing innovative businesses into our market. “Let’s tell the city that it’s not ok to prevent good businesses from opening up shop in New Orleans,” wrote Joe Corbett, creator of the petition. On January 25th, with over 1,200 supporters, Corbett sent the petition straight to Mayor Mitch Landrieu at City Hall. Corbett signed the letter from the “concerned but hopefully” citizens of New Orleans.

Online Scheduling Platform LocalMed Partners with Major Insurance Company

Baton Rouge-based LocalMed is an online scheduling platform that allows patients to find dental providers and book appointments in real-time with the ability to customize their own reminders via text, email or voice notifications. The company recently announced their partnership with United Concordia Dental Insurance, providing participating dentists with a 20% discount off of LocalMed’s published rate.

University of New Orleans to Host 3 Day Startup Event

3 Day Startup, 3DS for short, is a program designed to be fully hands-on, bringing in top investors and entrepreneurs, with an aim to start tech companies over the three day period. On February 7-9, University of New Orleans will be hosting a 3 Day Startup event. The organizers are excited to announce that the event is open to all universities in the area– SLU, LSU, Tulane, Loyola,  Xavier, Dillard, SUNO and more.

LSU Adds Accelerated Degree Program in Computer Science

LSU dean of engineering Rick Koubek recently made an announcement regarding a new program: “To fast-track this progress, today I am pleased to share that, first, LSU’s Division of Computer Science has developed an accelerated degree program in which students can attain an LSU Computer Science bachelor’s degree in three years,” Koubek said.

Geocent CEO Robert Savoie Named UNO Distinguished Alumnus of the Year

Robert “Bobby” Savoie, CEO of Geocent, has been named the University of New Orleans 2013 Homer L. It’s equipped with videos, interactive quizzes and simple step-by-step advice in addition to topics including burns, car accidents, falls and weather-related emergencies.
