Propeller Activates Vacant New Orleans Lots, Seeks Creative Proposals for Economic Development

PropellerAt a press conference yesterday morning (May 20), Propeller: A Force for Social Innovation announced that the PitchNOLA 2014: Lots of Progress vacant lots are now activated. Announced in partnership with the New Orleans Redevelopment Authority (NORA), Propeller shared that the competition is designed to stimulate community-based economic development.

This year, there are 15 vacant lots available for activation and development, all zoned for non-residential use. The Request for Proposal (RFP) is now live at www.GoPropeller.org/pitchnola and www.noraworks.org.

Propeller and NORA are offering a cash prize of $7,500, technical assistance and the opportunity to lease and/or purchase one or more properties from NORA to the competition winner.

The RFP will close on Tuesday, July 15th preceding the PitchNOLA event on August 19th.

“Propeller is excited to partner with NORA once again to spur innovative, community-oriented commercial activities on vacant lots. We also want to give a very special thank you to Entergy for providing the $7,500.00 cash prize,” said Andrea Chen, Propeller’s Executive Director.

“The goal of this year’s competition is to activate vacant lots in neighborhoods across the city,” said NORA’s Executive Director, Jeff Hebert. “We look forward to receiving proposals that will expand economic opportunity while respecting the culture of our neighborhoods.”
