Hacks/Hackers New Orleans Plans Open Data Hackathon

Hacks/Hackers is an international network of groups that merge the world of hackers and journalists, or “hacks.” Launched last year, Hacks/Hackers New Orleans wants to build the future of media, aiming to help members find inspiration and think in new directions, bringing together potential collaborators for projects and new ventures.

The group is organizing a hackathon called the New Orleans Nerd Super Bowl on February 5 from 10:00am to 4:00pm.

Topics that will be tackled at the hackathon will include, but are not limited to: recycling, rent prices/property values, transit, crime, and 211 and 311 calls. All ideas are welcome to help the group crack open data and create apps, maps, tools, and more.

“The city has already opened some really interesting data, like short term rental locations,” said Samantha Sunne, organizer of the local Hacks/Hackers group. “We’re hoping to make good use of that already open data and also make it more usable for other people.”
