Covington Company Announces Technology to Protect Children From Online Threats

OffenderWatch, a Covington-based company and largest sex offender registry in the country, has partnered with St. Charles Parish Sheriff Greg Champagne on a new technology to keep children safe in their communities.

The Safe Virtual Neighborhood is a patent-pending technology that uses the company’s database of registered offenders to track online behavior. The platform then notifies parents if any communication between the offender and their child occurs through texts, emails, social media, and online gaming systems.

According to a release, the project will be completed by the end of the year.

“Children’s neighborhoods are no longer geographic boundaries surrounding their house. They now live in a vastly larger virtual neighborhood made possible by the Internet,” said Mike Cormaci, president and co-founder of OffenderWatch. “As predators use technology as another way to prey on our children, we’ve had to expand our thinking to how we can safeguard them in their virtual neighborhood.”
