Operation Spark Introduces Summerware in Partnership with The White House

Operation Spark is a New Orleans non-profit that teaches the fundamentals of software development to kids by presenting the fastest route to a career in software development. The vast majority of our students are Opportunity Youth, which are 16 to 24 year olds who are not in school and unemployed.

Operation SparkThe organization has teamed up with partners, including Teach for America, the City of New Orleans, the American Bar Association, and The White House, to launch a weeklong event called Summerware kicking off on July 13.

Operation Spark is working with data released by the New Orleans Police Department for the upcoming program. The students will brainstorm and then build software solutions to some of the identified problems. The expected datasets include body camera and in-car metadata, use of force, recruitment, and 311 calls.

“We’re excited to work with the city and the New Orleans Police Department on the White House’s Police Data Initiative,” said CEO John Fraboni. “I have no doubt we can create software that will prove valuable to the citizens of New Orleans with this newly released police data.”
