Lyft, the taxi-like rideshare service, allows local community members to become drivers. Lyft is “your friend with a car,” and it’s now operating in New Orleans.
The company has received necessary permits required by the city to operate, and, as of March 3, Lyft services the New Orleans area, including Kenner, Slidell and Mandeville.
The Lyft app matches riders with local drivers at the tap of a button, much like Uber and other on-demand ride-hailing services.
Discussions in city hall to bring ridesharing companies to the city begin in 2013. At the time, Lyft had plans to begin operations in New Orleans in addition to going international.
Lyft also allows riders to enter a pickup and drop-off location to estimate the price of a trip. The company is available in 200 cities and has around 315,000 drivers.
