Each year, the social innovation hub Propeller hosts PitchNOLA: Living Well that awards funding for ideas to make health affordable and accessible for all New Orleanians. The fourth event took place earlier this week and awarded $10,000 in total funding.
Ten entrepreneurs took the stage at the live pitch competition presented by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana.
FIT (Formerly Incarcerated Transitions) Clinic took home the first place prize of $5,000. The clinic opened in 2015 and is still the only transitional care clinic in Louisiana offering care for individuals recently released from incarceration. The funding will go towards operating costs of first visit co-pay, labs, and medication for patients.
Second place of $3,000 went to CALM (Clear Answers to Louisiana Mental Health), an organization that helps local residents better understand, treat, and break the stigma of psychosis.
Street Medicine New Orleans, a group of volunteers who provide medical outreach to unsheltered homeless, was the third place winner and went home with $2,000.
The Audience Favorite Award went to REMiXEcology, who was awarded $500 for their idea to reconnect minorities with the great outdoors.
